Today, over 900 collections have been integrated into the Media Archive. These collections include over eight million photographic images, 220,000 video masters, 25,000 motion picture films, and one and a half million digital media files. They document the development, manufacturing and promotion of General Motors products as well as its events, facilities and leadership. These collections have been reviewed for content over the last two decades and a significant portion of them are accessible to GMMA staff through our digital asset management system.
Some GMMA historical photographic content available for editorial use can be found on our media website, media.gm.com. Photography posted here includes milestones vehicles and some of our most-requested content. This website is a great place to start your research efforts.
GMMA has trained visual media researchers available to assist with your research, whether the endeavor is of an enthusiast, academic or commercial nature. The GMMA staff prides itself on its ability to meet customer deadlines. Requests should be sent via email to email@example.com. The email should include how you intend to use the visual media you are requesting and what the intended audience and/or distribution will be. This will assure that we release assets that have the full rights for your desired use, and also that our researchers will be able to more fully understand your needs. For commercial endeavors, fees may apply.
Occasionally, GMMA grants permission to researchers to do their own on-site research. On-site access to the collection is by appointment only. Requests can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. Once your request has been vetted, one of our staff will contact you to schedule an appointment.
In addition to visual media, GMMA also manages General Motors’ collection of historical build documentation. Please note that build sheets are only available for Cadillac automobiles and neither build sheets nor dealer invoices are available for all years. The documentation for most brands dates back only to 1977. See www.gmmediaarchive.com for a complete list of availability.
